Zendo Emblem

Carved by Dairi Larry Marcrum from a calligraphy by Eido Roshi, it says, left-to-right, Un-Zan, "Cloud Mountains," the nome of the Zendo. The small vermilion rectangles are seals. It hangs above the zendo altar.

Zendo and Clouds

That's arrow bamboo in the foreground, and the big palm beyond the zendo (rear view) is a phoenix palm. This was taken from the woods behind the property by our photographer, Ray Lucki.

Altar in the Zendo

Below the Buddha image is an "eternal" oil light, with flowers to the left and a candle to the right, and further left, pictures and memorial tablets of laypeople, and further right, of a monk (Nyogen Senzaki). Below is an incense burner.

Through the Window

The ceiling fixture is rice paper and cherry wood, the tree is a huge old pecan, and the framed calligraphy, by Eido Roshi, reads, top-to-bottom: Nyo-gen, "Like a Fantasy," the name of the first Zen monk to come and stay in America permanently.

Scroll: Calligraphy by Eido Roshi

It reads, top to bottom: Alone-sit-great-courage-peak: "Alone I set on Great Courage Peak.": the response of Hyakujo in Case 26 of the Blue Cliff Record.

Path Trees and Sky

They're behind the Zendo. Magnificent banks of trees. A main freight RR line between Miami & points north has been taken out of the grass to the right by our photo editor, Zochi Zoltan Sisko.
